5. Do you have an instructional DVD for the Whisperide Bridle?
Yes! With every Whisperide Bridle purchase we include an Instructional DVD. If you would like to view the DVD before purchasing a Whisperide Bridle, please visit our Online Store to purchase a copy. The DVD shows how to adjust the Headstall for ground work and riding. The DVD also illustrates how the Whisperide Bridle works and basic cues for both ground work and riding.
6. If my horse has been trained using a bit, can I transfer to a Whisperide Bridle?
Yes. The horse can be transferred to the headstall very easily. The steps involved are:
- Putting the headstall on: You can put the headstall on and your horse will accept it easily, as if you are putting the halter on him. You need to make sure that you get the right size for your horse. Please refer to our ‘measuring for noavel ring size’ to see how to measure what size headstall will fit your horse.
- Ground Work: Before you even get on the horse, you need to make sure that the horse understands the new bridle he is in. For this you should do our ‘groundwork’ training. What the groundwork involves is:
- Making sure that the headstall is set in the groundwork position. Please refer to ‘adjusting WR bridle for groundwork’.
- Making the horse turn left, then right, back and forward. These steps need to be completed in a certain manner and it is all explained in detail in our Instructional Series Part 1 – Riding with the headstall DVD.
- Please pay attention to the lightness of the queue. Do not excessively pull on the reins or the Bridle to get your horse to complete the steps.
- Getting ready to ride: Once you have completed the groundwork and gone through the checks, as in our DVD, you would need to follow the following steps:
- Adjust the headstall to riding position. Please refer to ‘adjusting WR bridle for riding’
- You can mount the horse and repeat the steps you did for the groundwork. Details of these steps are on the same DVD (Instructional Series Part 1 – Riding with the headstall).
- Please be advised that the stop queue for the horse is essentially the same as back-up. To know that your horse will stop with the WR Bridle, you need to make sure he responds to the back-up queue.
- Once you have completed these steps, your horse should be ready to ride.
Although you might complete these steps once, and your horse is ready to ride in the Whisperide Bridle, we would recommend that you follow a routine with your horse for the first couple of times you ride him with the Whisperide Bridle. This routine should include making sure your horse is sound, doing the groundwork, completing safety checks, and exercises when you mount him to check his response. We would make this routine a habit that you repeat from time to time with your horse.
7. I can't use this product with certain shows and organizations. What do I do?
Although you might get very comfortable with the WR Bridle, we are aware that some organizations, or style of riding, do not allow bitless bridles in their competitions and shows. This does not mean that you cannot ride or train your horse in the WR Bridle. On the contrary, we have found that riding and training with the WR Bridle is actually more productive as you have the horse’s complete attention and can accomplish more to get ready for your competition. You can transfer your horse back to the bit when you wish to compete in an event or show.
8. Is the Noavel Headstall heavy?
We all might agree that when a horse is running, he is driving all his energy and power from his shoulder and neck. He is also using the same power to balance himself and the rider.
The average weight of a complete English Bridle is 3.2 lbs* and a complete Western Bridle is 3.4 lbs*. The Whisperide Bridle with the metal noavel ring weighs just less than 4 lbs, while the Whisperide Bridle with the fiber noavel ring weighs about 3.4 lbs. Thus, our bridles are comparable to what your horse is already used to. Furthermore, with our design, we have paid special attention to balance and weight distribution. We have tried to distribute the weight of the bridle so that it equally spreads across the neck and even some of it is borne into the reins.
*Please note that these are estimates based on ‘standard equipment’ we would expect to use everyday.
9. Is the Whisperide Bridle just for training purposes, or can it be used all of the time?
The WR Bridle is a complete system. You can use it to train your horses or for everyday riding, it is equally effective and suited for all needs.
The bridle comes in different sizes to fit different types and sizes of horses. It also comes in a variation of leather styles and we even offer a choice between the metal and fiber noavel ring.
In the system, our emphasis is as much on the groundwork as is on actually being in the saddle. Groundwork is as important as getting on and riding. Most of the ‘problems’ that a horse might have can be easily solved in groundwork.
Our system is based on cues and the gentleness of a cue. If you wish to use it on your horse all the time for riding, we would advise that you carefully review the Instructional Series Part 1 – Riding with the Whisperide Bridle. In that DVD, we explain how to complete groundwork and mount your horses for safety checks. Complete these as often as you can with your horses to ensure that your horse is safe to ride and can acknowledge the cues.
10. How should I care for my Whisperide Leather Products?
Here are a couple of tips to keep your tack clean and give it a good long life:
- Always store your tack in a clean dry place. Do not keep them in a moist or dusty place.
- Preferably hang your tack in appropriate places where they are unlikely to get wet, dirty, deformed or damaged. Do not throw your reins, headstall or other leather products on the floor or ground. Properly place them on bridle holders, saddle racks or carefully hang or lay them in a clean appropriate spot.
- Preferably, every time you finish using your tack, wipe off any sweat, dust, or other undesirable marks from your leather products with a clean sponge or cloth.
- Regularly check for wear and tear. If any stitching is coming undone, have it fixed at your earliest convenience.
- Regularly clean your products. It is important to give them conditioning and for better life of your products. Do not leave your tack for too long as the leather can dry out and start cracking.
- First, use a damp sponge or cloth to clear away any sweat or dirt from the leather. Make sure it is completely dried off before you use it or apply anything else.
- Next, use any good saddle or leather soap (or leather cleaner) on the products
- Take a clean damp wet sponge or cloth and apply saddle soap to it. There are various forms of soap available: in solid form or liquid. Follow instructions on your container to see how to apply.
- Using the sponge or cloth, start from one piece of the product, for example if it’s the saddle, you can start by cleaning the applying the soap to one of the stirrup leather, then moving to the next and so on. Make sure your rub both sides to apply the soap to leather. Rub a few times at least to make sure that you have applied enough to clean the leather.
- Thoroughly clean any and all parts of your equipment.
- Be careful not to apply too much soap to make it too oily. That will attract more dust.
- Once the soap is dry, use an appropriate conditioner. Conditioner should be used from time to time not every time you clean your products. Conditioner will help maintain the quality of the leather and stops it from cracking.
- Before you finish, you might want to buff your equipment with a piece of cloth to take away an excess soap or conditioner
